Empirical data, collected through specific surveys or derived from administrative records, form the basis for modern social research. Sharing and reusing data is cost-effective, but also allows innovative research by scaling up, by creating more opportunities for historical and comparative research and by being able to re-analyze data using new insights and new techniques.
