In this paper, Elias Herman Kruithof and Gil Keppens shed light on youth who stay home during school hours with parental knowledge or consteconsentnt. In stark contrast to the absence of research around school withdrawal, this study shows a remarkable prevalence of this form of unexcused absenteeism. Furthermore, the authors describe how youth with passive school withdrawal differs from youth with active school withdrawal in terms of gender, household characteristics and parenting style. Considering these differences, the study shows that differentiating between passive and active school withdrawal is necessary for any further research.
