About the lecture
Intergenerational mobility, the ability of individuals to move up or down the socioeconomic ladder compared to their parents, is a critical aspect of social and economic development. This lecture delves into the multifaceted dimensions of intergenerational mobility aiming to enrich comprehension regarding the perpetuation of inequalities across generations. Employing an interdisciplinary lens that draws insights from economics, sociology, and public policy, we embark on a comprehensive exploration.
Beginning with a discussion on how to define intergenerational mobility, we compare different methodologies for its measurement and provide concrete examples of why it is increasingly relevant for our societies nowadays. We will then move to assess the degree of intergenerational mobility in Europe and the US, how it changed across the years and perform a cross-country comparison to discuss what are the potential reasons behind the differences. Finally, to understand the mechanisms behind intergenerational mobility, we explore the role of public policies in addressing or worsening intergenerational mobility disparities. From education reform to taxation, governments and the society play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of opportunity for future generations.
