The 2025 edition of the BRISPO lecture series: Dr. Franz-Ferdinand Rothe, VUB | Automated inequalities: Questioning the sanctity of data in the age of AI
Dr. Franz-Ferdinand Rothe is a postdoctoral researcher in the Studies in Media, Innovation and Technology program within the Communication Sciences department at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. His research focuses on the intersection of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and sustainable development, with particular attention to the complex impacts these technologies have across environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Dr. Rothe examines how digital technologies can be leveraged for positive development outcomes while also addressing their potential negative effects.
In this lecture, Dr. Rothe examines the often-unquestioned assumption that data-driven technologies and artificial intelligence inherently lead to positive social outcomes, revealing how seemingly neutral technologies can embed biases.
