2000-2002
Very little is known about the influence of the feminisation of the teaching profession. Therefore this project wants to examine the influence of the sex composition of the teaching staff on the cognitive achievement and the values of their pupils. In the analysis, we will control for the influences of the family, media consumption, participation in associations, religion, … of the pupils. Furthermore, we will take into account the school characteristics which are related with the sex composition of the teaching staff. In the next stage, we shall examine how the differences between students can be linked to the proportion of female teachers in the school. We will focus on differences found in behaviour, attitudes and values (e.g. the didactic techniques they use, their pedagogical view, their attitude towards traditional gender roles,…) between male and female teachers. Next, we will test if the sex ratio of teachers and the gender of the school principal has an effect on the school characteristics. This research will be based on a secondary analysis on the TIMSS-database (2894 pupils) and on a database of the Centre of Sociology ( 4722 pupils). The analysing techniques that will be used are multivariate and multilevel.
