About the project
The rising importance of obtaining a (high school) diploma as an entrance ticket to the labour market and to social integration and participation in general, places unqualified school-leavers increasingly in a vulnerable position. The educational system, therefore, provides several alternative routes for high school dropouts to obtain a high school diploma. Very little is known, however, about the motivations and educational tracks of the participants in 'tweedekansonderwijs' (second chance education) and the 'centrale examencommissie' (central exam-commission). This study maps the sociographic profile, the learning paths and motivations of the participants of 'tweedekansonderwijs' and the 'centrale examencommissie'. To this end we conduct a survey of the registered students, compare this target group with unqualified school-leavers (using SONAR-data), and organise a number of focusgroups with successful and unsuccessful (former) participants from these alternative programmes.
