This research was carried out by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (MOSI - Transport & Logistiek & SOCI) to investigate the social relevance of investments in pupil transportation. In the first phase, social aspects of pupil transportation were surveyed in order to elucidate its educational-socializing role and especially the relationships between demographics, social background and pupil transportation use alongside a WTP evaluation for the service and a customer satisfaction survey.
Regarding mobility and traffic safety, the avoided external costs of using pupil transportation were calculated. These costs were weighed against other benefits to evaluate the social cost-benefit ratio for the implementation of pupil transport in GO! schools.
