The paper, authored by Didier Ruedin and Eva van Belle (who joined BRISPO in January 2024) tackles the practice of résumé whitening when immigrants and their descendants modify their résumés to hide their immigrant background. The reason they do this is to avoid potential discrimination during the hiring process. However, we don't have much real-world evidence on how common this practice is. In their article Eva and Didier analyse data on immigrants in Switzerland and reveal that about 9% of them used résumé whitening. It seems that immigrants do this mainly when they expect or face discrimination.
