Our former PhD researcher Dr. Billie Martiniello has been awarded the IMISCOE 2026 Maria Baganha Best Thesis Award for her outstanding dissertation on ethno-racial discrimination in the rental housing market "Rather Christophe than Mustapha: Understanding and Responding to Ethnic Discrimination in the Rental Housing Market".
Each year, the IMISCOE conference recognizes an exceptional doctoral dissertation with the Maria Baganha Best Thesis Award. This year, the award was presented to our former BRISPO colleague, Dr. Billie Martiniello, in recognition of her research on the contexts, mechanisms, and responses to ethno-racial discrimination in the rental housing market.
Billie defended her dissertation in 2025 under the supervision of Prof. Pieter-Paul Verhaeghe. The jury particularly praised the methodological breadth of her research - combining field experiments, surveys, in-depth interviews, and document analysis - as well as the comprehensive way in which she examined discrimination from multiple perspectives.
Congratulations, Billie, on this well-deserved recognition!
