We warmly invite you to the seminar “Be My Voice: Stories from Gaza and What We Owe”, which will take place on 19 May from 16:00 to 17:00 on Campus Etterbeek (exact location to be confirmed).
In this seminar, we welcome Alhassan Selmi, a Palestinian journalist from Gaza. For more than 880 days, he reported from the Gaza Strip through social media, Italian media, and other international outlets. As a photographer, videomaker, and journalist, he continued to document everyday life under war in the most difficult circumstances.
Alhassan was only able to leave Gaza thanks to a government scholarship that allowed him to continue his studies in Italy, the only way he could get out. He is now living there, while his family, friends, and fellow journalists remain trapped in Gaza. As he is not yet able to travel within Europe, he will join the seminar via video link.
Drawing on this personal and professional experience, he will speak about war, loss, resilience, and the burden of bearing witness. The seminar will be followed by a short contribution from journalist Raffaele Oriani and illustrator Marcella Brancaforte, who have supported and amplified Alhassan Selmi’s story through the BeMyVoice project.
This seminar invites us to reflect not only on the human and social reality behind the news, but also on what we can do here in Belgium as researchers, academics, and students.
An open conversation on testimony, responsibility, and solidarity.
