Vijay Prashad, a historian, author, and executive director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, will give a lecture on the invitation of the Department of Sociology.
Wednesday 3 December 2025 18:00
Auditorium QD, VUB, Pleinlaan 2.
As the global order shifts and the demand for justice grows louder, the university once again stands at the crossroads of knowledge and power. What is the role of the student activist in the Global North today—amid wars, climate crisis, and decolonial movements that are reshaping the meaning of democracy and freedom?
This lecture explores the urgent need for active, anti-colonial politics within higher education in the North. How can student activism go beyond institutional reform and instead build deep, practical solidarity with struggles for liberation and equality in the Global South?
Drawing connections between historical moments of student resistance and contemporary global movements—from campus occupations to transnational solidarity campaigns - Vijay Prasad examines how students can help redefine the university as a site of global responsibility and transformative thought.
The central question is: Can resistance in the North be truly emancipatory if it is not in alliance with the movements of the South?
An invitation to rethink what it means, today, to be both a student and a world citizen.
