Eva Swyngedouw
Biography
Eva Swyngedouw is an Assistant Professor of Urban Sociology at BRISPO, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). She received her PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago in 2016.
Before joining BRISPO, she was a Visiting Professor at Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and KU Leuven, and a Postdoctoral Researcher at Cosmopolis Centre for Urban Studies (VUB) and the Power and Practice Network at Ghent University.
Her research focuses on urban displacement, housing insecurity, and citizenship. As an urban ethnographer, she examines how social and institutional processes structure lived experiences of belonging and access to housing in contemporary cities.
She is the Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting Grant project EXPULSE (2026 - 2031), which investigates how urban expulsion regimes in Brussels, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Thessaloniki drive housing market exclusion and reconfigure urban citizenship.
