
Akim Aalou
Biography
Before joining BRISPO in 2023, Akim obtained an MSc in Sociology at the University of Antwerp and an MA in Nationalism Studies at the Central European University in Vienna. During his studies, he developed an interest in identity, intergroup relations, and inequality from a cultural sociological perspective. He first joined BRISPO as a teaching assistant in the BA in Social Sciences, leading the reading seminars for Critical Thinking in Sociology and Current Issues I and II. In 2024, he was awarded a predoctoral FWO fellowship for a longitudinal ethnographic study of children's school lives in socio-economically and ethnoracially balanced schools during the transition from kindergarten to primary school. This project is jointly supervised by prof. dr. Els Consuegra (BRITE), prof. dr. Peter Stevens (UGENT), and dr. Timo Van Canegem (BRITE and UGENT).
